Blog 2 Lisa Delpit Other Peoples Children (Quotes)

While reading Lisa Delpits Other Peoples Children article I realized there are many quotes that are very heavy and moving and create an area of conversation. For Instance on page 25 under The Silenced Dialogue "Children from middle class homes tend to do better in school than those from non middle class homes because the culture of the school is based on the culture of the upper and middle classes of those in power.'' I think this quote by Delpit is so powerful because it is speaking up and calling out the middle and upper class pretty much claiming that there responsible for setting the tone and expectations for students. I also feel as if though this quote is not always true when it come to the lower class I don't believe your social class identifies how smart you are. It all matters in how much you as a human apply yourself. Another major quote in this reading states "But parents who don't function within that culture often want something else. It's not that they disagree with the former aim, it's just that they want something more. They want to ensure that the school provides their children with discourse patterns, interactional styles, and spoken and written language codes that will allow them success in the larger society."(Delpit 29) This quote really stood out to me because it's talking about the difference of liberal educators and there purpose of schooling and then the quote is speaking upon those who seek more with an education. Those parents who want school to be the stepping stone of preparing their children for the world. Both of these kinds of people have the right to their beliefs of what they want their children to get out of their education. Delpit states on page 32 "Again, I tentatively attribute the problem to teachers resistance to exhibiting power in the classroom... Two qualifiers are necessary, however. The teacher cannot be the only expert in the classroom. To deny students of their own expert knowledge is to disempower them." This really stood out to me because I think this is a major problem in classrooms especially when it comes to older teachers who are very set to the style of only learning from lecture.

Comments: I strongly believe that this is not just a problem in grade schools but this is a problem even in college I feel like I professors also strongly believe that they are ones with all of knowledge and group work or voicing your own thoughts is not allowed. These are all quotes that I think are very serious in todays society.

This link is to a explanation and understanding of the word Pedagogy I think its' very important when reading this article by Delpit to understand what a Pedagogy is.

Alan Johnson Intro to Privilege, Power and DIfference: S.C.W.A.A.M.P. (Reflection)

As reading Alan Johnsons's Intro to Privilege, Power, and Difference I began to take a look and reflect upon my own life when it comes to sexism, privilege, and power. These today as mentioned are all topics that everyone is afraid to speak about even though we live them day to day. As I read Johnson touched upon sexism and it led to think about life as a woman. Like all of you I go to school at Rhode Island College and before the semester began my dad and I did a drive through RIC where he showed me where it was safe to park and to always have my keys out and ready. I began to think I know he wants me to be safe and I am the oldest so all of this is new to my family but I also wondered will he d the same for my brother? Last Thursday as I sat in the RIC parking lot waiting to go into my night class I received a phone call from my dad reminding me to park under a light, have my keys out ready, check the back sear, and to have my pepper spry. Again will he do this with my brother popped into my head? I know we all sometimes don't even realize we do these things I don't consider my dad to be sexist just concerned for his daughters safety. I think If this wasn't something our society normalized then maybe woman wouldn't feel the need to preform these actions when walking alone at night. One of the biggest aspects or idea that I have taken away from this reading would be the use of the diversity wheel just as Johnson did I sat and thought of my differences. Im female, European white descent, middle class, daughter, sister, college student, and Greek Orthodox Christian. This exercise has made me realize that it does not speak about my individuality but it does speak upon my social status where I lay as a human in society. As I look over my responses I would say that Im privileged young adult living in todays world. For myself I think this concept is all about realizing and putting your own life and status into a much more bigger perspective.

As I read I felt as if though I really began to reflect. Take a look into my own life and where I lay in this world. I began to look at a bigger picture how we as a society do tip toe around speaking about where we lay or where we come from or stand on this universe. Once we do realize that maybe that person is not like us we begin to form ideas about that person and no thats not something we do by accident I think we all tend todo this as routinely because this idea has become so normalized in our society.

Comments: A tap on the glass I think is something we need to normalize much more in our society because the power and privilege is something thats very impactful in life.

I love to travel while in Greece this summer I was fortunate enough to meet up with my best friend Gianna and visit the island her family is from. The next picture is

During my free time I spend it with my family we are all very close. This is my three year old godson Christian who I spend most of my time with. My brother Owen and I are very close we love to just hangout together. I also spend a lot of my time with my sorority friends I'm part of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority here in campus.

Over this passed break I had the opportunity to go to Disney World for a conference for SVA (Student Veterans of America) through RIC. Although I went with others from RIC I went to the parks on my own the best experience ever!
