Blog 2 Lisa Delpit Other Peoples Children (Quotes)

While reading Lisa Delpits Other Peoples Children article I realized there are many quotes that are very heavy and moving and create an area of conversation. For Instance on page 25 under The Silenced Dialogue "Children from middle class homes tend to do better in school than those from non middle class homes because the culture of the school is based on the culture of the upper and middle classes of those in power.'' I think this quote by Delpit is so powerful because it is speaking up and calling out the middle and upper class pretty much claiming that there responsible for setting the tone and expectations for students. I also feel as if though this quote is not always true when it come to the lower class I don't believe your social class identifies how smart you are. It all matters in how much you as a human apply yourself. Another major quote in this reading states "But parents who don't function within that culture often want something else. It's not that they disagree with the former aim, it's just that they want something more. They want to ensure that the school provides their children with discourse patterns, interactional styles, and spoken and written language codes that will allow them success in the larger society."(Delpit 29) This quote really stood out to me because it's talking about the difference of liberal educators and there purpose of schooling and then the quote is speaking upon those who seek more with an education. Those parents who want school to be the stepping stone of preparing their children for the world. Both of these kinds of people have the right to their beliefs of what they want their children to get out of their education. Delpit states on page 32 "Again, I tentatively attribute the problem to teachers resistance to exhibiting power in the classroom... Two qualifiers are necessary, however. The teacher cannot be the only expert in the classroom. To deny students of their own expert knowledge is to disempower them." This really stood out to me because I think this is a major problem in classrooms especially when it comes to older teachers who are very set to the style of only learning from lecture.

Comments: I strongly believe that this is not just a problem in grade schools but this is a problem even in college I feel like I professors also strongly believe that they are ones with all of knowledge and group work or voicing your own thoughts is not allowed. These are all quotes that I think are very serious in todays society.

This link is to a explanation and understanding of the word Pedagogy I think its' very important when reading this article by Delpit to understand what a Pedagogy is.

  1. I like how they did not just agree with the quote they added rather showed where they agreed and disagreed with it, providing explanations for each side

  2. I agree there were a bunch of heavy moving quotes in this reading. The first quote you used on page 25 really stood out to me as well.

  3. Totally agree with the last part especially with professors/teachers. Teachers are sometimes too stubborn and need to realize that they are meant to learn with their students, especially in circumstances such as Delpit described.

  4. I like how you included a link explaining the word 'pedagogy' because I personally did not have much familiarity with the word before reading.

  5. I like how you provided both sides of the quote and came to your own conclusion with it by agreeing and disagreeing. Choosing both is harder to explain and provide evidence since it is your own mixed version. It is also good advice to note that teacher are meant to learn with their students.

  6. Yes PEDAGOGY is so important. Glad you took a moment to look it up. We will talk about it a lot this semester, as it is key to texts like Delpit's! Also you left me thinking about this statement you made: "It all matters in how much you as a human apply yourself." I think Delpit would disagree with you. Let's try to talk about it in class and see if you agree.
